Out of 156 teams total, Oakmont of Santa Clarita’s “Team Oakmont” was the No. 1 fundraiser at this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
A total of $11,130 was raised by the team’s 28 members for the Alzheimer’s Association, exceeding the listed $10,000 goal, according to the team’s walk page.
“We had a very successful Walk to End Alzheimer’s here in Santa Clarita,” said Mary Dembkowski of Oakmont of Santa Clarita. “It was just great to see everyone that came out and supported the cause, and it was just a sea of purple walking.”
Top fundraisers for Team Oakmont were Debbie DiCorrado — who brought in $2,390 — and Linda Auch — who raised $2,415.
“My mother Bea’s losing battle with Alzheimer’s ended in January 2013,” said DeCorrado on her donation page. “In her honor I walk and volunteer to help reclaim the future for millions. By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m committed to raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s research, care and support.”
For the two-mile walk, which happened at Valencia’s Bridgeport Park on Oct. 7, Oakmont Senior Living residents, family, friends, staff and supporters wore tie-dyed purple t-shirts in a show of unity.
All in all, about 800 participants from Santa Clarita raised over $96,000, according to the website for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Santa Clarita 2017.
“Everyone reached their goal and the walk was just a great success,” Dembkowski said. “We have so many wonderful families and friends that year after year, they support the cause, so I want to thank everyone who supported Team Oakmont.”
