“Physical activity, as we know, helps the brain as well, so it is such an important component,” said Mary Dembkowski of Oakmont of Santa Clarita.
This is just one of the many reasons that Oakmont offers their residents a wide variety of activities to get involved in.
“Our philosophy is, we build activities around certain core elements, and those core elements are of course, thinking (and) keeping the mind sharp,” said Dembkowski. “So our activities might be one day doing trivia, another day our book club is meeting, or we have a current events discussion, or our bridge group, so those are built around that thinking, thought-provoking activities.”
Residents can expect activities such as chair dancing, zumba, weightlifting, yoga, chair volleyball, to maintain a sound mind and body.
“And then we have for those that are creative, workshops that inspire creativity and reflect the interest of our residents — we do flower arranging every Sunday morning,” says Dembkowski, adding, “(We also have a) watercolor class for those residents who enjoy painting, a gardening club, and then every Saturday morning we do some sort of creative craft, whether it be blanket-making, or last month making dog beds for the local shelter.”

Oakmont also offers their residents health education opportunities.
“Next week we have a doctor coming in from UCLA that’s going to be talking on fall prevention, which is really an important topic, and the residents can come in and hear a doctor speak,” Dembkowski announced.
Oakmont residents continue to give back to the Santa Clarita Valley community with their philanthropic efforts, and they recently raised over $800 for the Walk To End All Alzheimer’s with their event “BBQ, Beer, and Boogie” last Wednesday..
“We have a different theme every quarter, so last quarter the theme was all about pets, so our residents were volunteering at the shelter, The Shelter Hope Pet Shop,” said Dembkowski.
Oakmont will end their series with an animal adoption event set to take place at Oakmont of Santa Clarita on June 10 from 1 to 3 p.m. in partnership with Shelter Hope Pet Shop Santa Clarita.
