The residents and staff at Oakmont of Santa Clarita are ringing in the new year by celebrating their one-year anniversary.
More than 100 residents and 75 staff members have made Oakmont of Santa Clarita home since the senior living community had its grand opening in January 2016.
“We’ve really become a family — it’s pretty amazing,” said Executive Director Margie Veis, adding that Oakmont’s first year has been “a roller coaster, but fabulous.”
For its first holiday season, Oakmont’s residents and staff hosted a tree lighting event and Hanukkah party; collected toys for children in need by holding a “Toys for Tots” drive; and even hosted the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce’s end-of-the-year mixer.

As the holiday season wrapped up and the new year began, Veis noted that she is has seen more adult children come to Oakmont looking for information as a result of noticing changes in their senior family member(s).
“They’re noticing maybe Mom’s not taking her meds, or they looked a little disheveled and not Christmas-ready — not the parents that they saw maybe six months ago because they live out of town,” Veis said. “So I think it’s important to take a minute as we start the new year to just re-evaluate: how’s it really going with Mom or Dad?”
Some questions Veis recommended asking to help determine if a senior loved one needs help include:
Does he or she become confused easily?
Is there only old food, or no food, in the refrigerator?
Is he or she taking all their medications every day?
Does he or she seem to be having trouble with their hygiene?
Is he or she safe behind the wheel of a car?
There are a variety of options available at Oakmont of Santa Clarita, whether a senior is still independent or is in need of basic or advanced assisted living.
“It’s assisted living and we have memory care, so we can meet the needs really of any senior,” Veis said. “For some people, it’s just living a life of luxury. So (there’s) lots of options.”
